Essentials for a Natural Labor and Birth Experience

Essentials for a Natural Labor and Birth Experience

Lately, I’ve received several emails seeking advice and resources for natural labor and birth. Having gone through this experience a few times, I thought it would be helpful to share some of the top resources I’ve found, along with what essentials I bring with me during labor and delivery.

Some influential books shaped my decision to choose a natural birth, and I highly recommend the documentary “The Business of Being Born.” It offers an insightful breakdown of modern maternity care in America and features some deeply touching birth stories.

After experiencing natural birth, I wouldn’t consider doing it any other way, but it does require a bit more preparation. Unless you’re one of those lucky women with swift, two-hour labors (and yes, I envy you!), labor can often feel like an endurance test. From my perspective, the ability to relax and “let go” is crucial for an easier labor, and there are several steps you can take in advance to help facilitate relaxation.

Here’s my basic hospital packing list, though midwives will often provide additional item lists for home births. Realistically, most of these supplies go unused, but I find it comforting to have them just in case. I try to drink some Laborade and eat nutritious snacks before heading to the hospital; I do this during the transition phase to reduce the chances of needing interventions. Usually, I’m already in transition before I leave, so many items don’t make it to the hospital with me.

When acting as a doula or preparing for a home birth, I also gather some extra supplies along with the midwife/birth tub kit.

What’s your preferred way to give birth? If you’ve delivered naturally before, what’s your top advice for others? Feel free to share your thoughts!
