Crafting Your Own Herb and Spice Pantry

Crafting Your Own Herb and Spice Pantry

Lately, I’ve been getting a lot of emails asking about what’s in my herb and spice cabinet and how much I typically order to keep up with my recipes. While growing and drying your own herbs is best, buying them from a trusted source can be more convenient.

I’ve organized my list into two parts: Culinary Uses and Health/Body Recipes, since I use herbs for both. I usually purchase my herbs in bulk online, ordering enough to last a few months to save on shipping costs.

When it comes to cooking, I buy all my herbs and spices in bulk. This not only saves money but also allows us to use organic spices without breaking the bank. We often cook two to three times a day, so buying in bulk is practical. Plus, many conventional store-bought spices have unwanted additives like anti-caking agents or MSG, which we prefer to avoid. Making our own blends is an easy and cost-effective solution.

Here are my 14 most-used herb and spice blends, although I often just flavor food based on what’s available in my cabinet. My usual culinary herbs order includes a variety, except when I’ve managed to grow enough in my garden.

We also use herbs for tinctures, salves, and skin and beauty recipes. For these, my shopping list usually consists of specific ingredients, alongside some non-herbal items.

Do you make your own spices? What’s in your herb and spice cabinet? Feel free to share!
