If it feels like I’m always cleaning, it’s usually the kitchen or the bathroom that needs attention. Bathrooms seem to take forever to clean because of all the different surfaces and how often they’re used. And if you have boys, cleaning their bathroom can be especially challenging. I’ve found some great homemade bathroom cleaners that really work.
If you’re like me and cleaning the bathroom isn’t exactly your idea of fun, a simple checklist and these homemade cleaners can make it much easier—and cheaper!
You really don’t need fancy products to get the bathroom clean. With basic ingredients like borax, castile soap, and essential oils such as eucalyptus, you can have a bathroom that’s both clean and wonderfully scented. Here are some of my favorite homemade cleaners and tips.
For mirrors, I use a mix of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Paper towels tend to leave behind residue, so I use old t-shirts or newspapers for a streak-free shine.
To tackle the grime on countertops, I use a microfiber cloth along with my homemade cleaners. Remember to occasionally wipe down the walls, especially near the toilet, as they can accumulate dust and germs too.
Here are some DIY cleaner ideas for countertops:
– Use microfiber towels; they’re great for wiping down all kind of surfaces, even soap scum in showers. If you don’t have them, other natural cleaning options work well, too.
For a naturally clean shower and tub:
– Once a week, I sprinkle some baking soda inside the toilet, add a cup of white vinegar, and scrub with a reusable brush. The fizzing action removes stains and odors. This method also works great for cleaning the outside of the toilet and floor area.
If lingering smells persist (which is common with potty-training boys), they might be hiding in the toilet seat hinges and under the bolt caps. I remove and clean these every couple of weeks.
Here are some recipes for a naturally clean toilet, both inside and out:
– You can use these homemade cleaners on multiple surfaces. If you prefer not to make your own, I recommend using Branch Basics, a versatile natural cleaner. I also like products from Grove Collaborative, which I’ve discussed in more detail elsewhere. They have amazing natural cleaning products and a great glass spray bottle.
Most bathroom odors come from urine and germs on surfaces and in the air. A thorough cleaning should help take care of those smells naturally. It’s always pleasant to have a bathroom that smells fresh with scents like lemon or cinnamon and clove.
I’m not a fan of bathrooms that smell like bleach or artificial air fresheners filled with toxic chemicals. Products like Febreze and Lysol have ingredients that can be harmful, especially for children. To keep your bathroom fresh without the toxins, try these natural ideas:
