I’ve previously discussed the challenges with using essential oils today in one of my more debated posts, but now I’d like to highlight their benefits.
Despite having potential downsides if misused, many people have successfully and safely used essential oils for various purposes. Essential oils are super-concentrated plant extracts derived from parts like leaves, roots, and flowers. These oils have been a staple in natural remedies for thousands of years, but modern society has lost some of the wisdom of past generations in using these natural solutions.
Essential oils have seen a recent surge in popularity, but they are far from new. It’s worth noting that today’s essential oils are often more potent than those used historically due to advanced distillation techniques.
When it comes to essential oils, less is more. Their potency means it’s crucial to use only as much as needed. Excessive use, especially internal consumption, can be harmful. There’s also the issue of sustainability, as producing essential oils requires vast amounts of plant material, potentially impacting the environment negatively over time.
The quality of essential oils varies widely. While they can be expensive, quality oils require a substantial amount of plant material and careful production techniques. Some cheaper oils might be diluted or fail to meet quality tests. High-quality oils should be made from organic plants without chemicals.
Essential oils’ potency demands precise and cautious use. I’ve encountered plenty of advice on internal usage, but I recommend consulting professionals first due to their strength. Personally, I favor diffusing and topical application for their gentler effects. The small molecules in essential oils allow them to be quickly absorbed into the body when applied to the skin, providing their benefits but still necessitating safe usage.
Always dilute oils with a carrier oil for topical use and seek advice when applying them, especially on children. Aromatherapy, or diffusing oils into the air, is another great method that allows you to enjoy the oils’ benefits as you inhale them. Some evidence suggests that aromatherapy can be more effective and safer than internal use.
Essential oils can help you save money by using them in DIY beauty and cleaning products instead of buying these items from the store. I buy essential oils from various companies, depending on their intended use, always ensuring they are certified organic and available in different sizes, including bulk options. However, most of my oils come from a primary source.
Keep in mind that where you purchase your essential oils matters. Ensure they are from reliable suppliers, and make sure to read up on any potential risks before using them. This article includes a medical review by Dr. Michelle Sands, ND, emphasizing that while informative, it’s not a substitute for personal medical advice. Always consult your doctor first.
