Boost Your Hair’s Health with a Homemade Hair Mask

Boost Your Hair's Health with a Homemade Hair Mask

Your hair goes through a lot with exposure to weather, not-so-great water, hair care products, and heat styling tools. That’s why I rely on homemade hair care recipes to keep my hair healthy, like this herbal hair rinse. This DIY hair mask is another fantastic addition to any natural hair care routine.

Sometimes, shampoo and conditioner just aren’t enough to deal with the stress we put our hair through. Even if you eat a diet rich in nutrients, like collagen and bone broth, your hair might still need some extra care. While natural shampoo and conditioner help to clean and hydrate your hair, adding a protein-rich hair mask can boost its strength and shine.

Sure, you can buy a hair mask, but many ingredients in your kitchen are great for nourishing and strengthening your hair. Plus, when you make it yourself, you know exactly what’s in your all-natural hair mask!

Before diving into what goes into this hair mask, let’s talk about why these ingredients are so beneficial. Your hair follicles and roots are mostly collagen, which is why eating collagen-rich foods and using good quality collagen powder supports hair growth and health. Your hair is 91% protein, so adding a protein treatment helps it rebuild.

Here’s what I put into my hair mask and why each ingredient matters. Use this mask right after washing your hair with natural products.

Eggs have been a popular choice in hair care for ages. The proteins in eggs are too large to fully bind with hair, but they are rich in other vitamins and minerals that benefit your hair and scalp health. For the best results, use free-range eggs, as they have a better nutritional profile.

This is the main attraction in the hair mask. I love using gelatin in so many things, from making healthy snacks to strengthening hair. Gelatin proteins easily bind with hair, repairing damage and boosting strength. It includes twelve of the top thirteen amino acids found in hair.

Raw honey is another versatile ingredient in our food recipes and beauty tutorials, known for its soothing properties. It not only adds strength to the hair when combined with protein but also keeps it soft and flexible, preventing brittleness.

Essential oils are optional but can enhance the benefits while giving your hair a great smell. Lavender, rosemary, cedarwood, and ylang ylang are wonderful choices for healthy scalp and hair.

Also known as scouring rush or shavegrass, this plant was once used for cleaning due to its tough texture. It’s rich in silica and other minerals like magnesium and potassium, which promote hair health. Silica strengthens not just plants, but also hair, teeth, and nails.

If you’re interested in trying something different, there’s also a hair mask alternative that uses molasses.
