Must-Have Items for the Naturally-Minded New Mom

The time after giving birth can be a mix of emotions as you welcome a long-awaited new baby into your family. As a seasoned mom and doula, I’ve put together a list of essential items to help make this transition smoother for both mom and baby.

You might not need everything on this list, but these are the things I found helpful with my own babies. I’ve also gifted them to friends and family after they welcomed their little ones!

Recovering postpartum involves managing discomfort and preparing for temporary bodily changes. This often includes self-care products and items to support milk production for breastfeeding moms.

After a vaginal birth, the perineum—located between the vagina and anus—can be swollen, sore, and uncomfortable due to stretching and possible tearing. Proper care can ease discomfort, promote healing, and prevent infection.

A sitz bath is a warm, shallow bath that helps soothe and clean the perineal area after childbirth. It can relieve pain from an episiotomy, tears, or hemorrhoids caused by vaginal delivery. Adding herbal infusions, witch hazel, and Epsom salts can enhance healing!

If making your own sitz bath sounds too much right now, I also recommend some great store-bought options. They can be a wonderful form of self-care for tired moms.

Witch hazel pads are another great postpartum help. They ease soreness in the perineal area and can be useful for hemorrhoids, which are common after pregnancy. You can buy them or make your own by soaking cotton rounds in alcohol-free witch hazel and aloe gel, and adding a few drops of lavender essential oil. Keep them in a zip-top bag to use as needed.

After using the bathroom, clean the area with warm water, pat dry, and apply a witch hazel pad for relief. Witch hazel is also found in other forms of perineal care, like peri sprays.

Peri bottles are helpful for perineal hygiene postpartum. Fill them with warm water to gently rinse sore areas, cleaning away urine and bacteria without irritation.

Perineal sprays often contain soothing ingredients like witch hazel and aloe. Spray directly onto the perineum for relief. Commercial options exist, or you can make your own using simple recipes.

Postpartum hygiene products are key for comfort and cleanliness in the weeks after delivery. Disposable underwear can be convenient, but washable period underwear is a more sustainable choice. Absorbent options are available specifically for postpartum needs, and regular maxi pads can work too, but avoid tampons, which can cause infections.

Digestion can slow down after childbirth due to hormonal changes and less activity. While stool softeners are an option, alternatives like magnesium supplements or Epsom salt baths may help. Consult with a healthcare professional if constipation persists or if you experience rectal bleeding.

The early postpartum weeks can be painful. Ice packs can soothe the perineum, C-section scars, or sore nipples. Hot water bottles and heating pads ease muscle tension. You can even make your own “padsicles,” which are sanitary pads soaked in a soothing solution and frozen to help with swelling and discomfort.

While ibuprofen is commonly used for postpartum pain, it might not be suitable for everyone, especially those recovering from a C-section. Consider natural remedies like arnica, boswellia, and ginger tea instead.

Afterpains, or postpartum contractions, help tighten the uterus back to its pre-pregnancy size and reduce bleeding. Heat and natural pain relief can help ease these discomforts.

With everything new moms have to manage, self-care can often fall by the wayside. A postpartum self-care kit can be very helpful. Herbal teas support recovery and relaxation, while essential oils can promote restful sleep.

A natural belly butter can care for postpartum skin. A simple whipped body butter with essential oils can be customized, or you can find gentle options online.

Keeping a journal can also be beneficial. Whether for health tracking or reflection, a personalized journal makes a lovely gift.

Breast care is vital too. Choose nursing bras that offer comfort and allow for easy breastfeeding access. Be mindful of bras with latex or nickel if you have allergies. Nursing pads can help manage milk leaks and stay comfortable.

Nipple cream can provide relief for sore nipples in the early days of breastfeeding. DIY options or organic versions can be found online.

Lactation cookies can boost milk production and make a great gift for moms planning to breastfeed. Lastly, a breast pump is essential if you’re returning to work or just need to maintain a good milk supply.

Don’t forget about the baby! Practical items for the little one are nice to have ready. Making a postpartum recovery kit for yourself or a friend can be a thoughtful gift. Moms deserve some extra TLC during this time.
