4 Effective Natural Methods for Whitening Your Teeth

Teeth whitening is a huge industry, but many treatments out there use chemicals that can make your teeth feel sensitive for a while. I know this from personal experience since my attempts at teeth whitening in high school left me with sensitive teeth for years.

When I was expecting my first child, I wanted to steer clear of anything with chemicals, including teeth whitening products. So, I started looking for natural ways to brighten my smile that were both effective and safe. Knowing that chemicals can easily be absorbed through the sensitive skin in our mouths, I aimed to use only options safe enough to ingest.

These natural methods aren’t meant to replace regular dental care, and I did consult my dentist first (which I recommend everyone should do too!). I found that these techniques worked well alongside my daily brushing and flossing.

One teeth whitening method I love, though it’s a bit unconventional, is activated charcoal. A holistic dentist recommended it to me years ago, and though I was doubtful at first, it’s shown great results over time.

Using activated charcoal might seem alarming—your teeth turn black during the process, making you worry it’s a trap—but after rinsing and brushing, your teeth look whiter than before. This works because activated charcoal is extremely porous and absorbs substances like tannins that stain teeth. It might also offer other oral health benefits as it can change the pH balance in the mouth, helping to prevent cavities and fight bacteria that cause tooth decay and gingivitis. I now include it in my routine alongside my remineralizing toothpaste.

Back in 2012, when I first wrote about using activated charcoal, it was controversial, and I even received some backlash. But now, pictures of people using it are everywhere on Pinterest, and it’s gained a bit more acceptance.

Some tips I’ve picked up: I use Wellnesse Charcoal Toothpaste now, and if you’re looking to step up your game, I discovered a system using activated charcoal and LED light for even better results. Plus, it’s less messy!

Another natural method that some find controversial is oil pulling. This involves swishing oil, like coconut or sesame, in your mouth for about 20 minutes to help reduce plaque and bacteria. Coconut oil, in particular, is effective against the bacteria that lead to cavities and gum disease. Since starting oil pulling regularly, my teeth feel smoother, and my dentist has noted less plaque during check-ups.

To make oil pulling more convenient, I use single-use coconut oil chews and do this while showering. There’s a detailed tutorial on oil pulling using coconut oil.

Last year, I mixed some of my favorite teeth-whitening ingredients to create a homemade whitening toothpaste. It includes natural calcium, Xylitol, and MCT or coconut oil, making it a great remineralizing, bacteria-fighting whitening option.

Another surprising remedy that actually works is turmeric. Even though turmeric is known for staining things yellow, it can effectively whiten teeth.
