Craft Your Own Sugar Wax for Silky Smooth Skin

Craft Your Own Sugar Wax for Silky Smooth Skin

Sugar waxing is one of the few things I think white sugar is good for. (Sugar scrubs come in as a close second!). Here’s an easy guide on how you can make your own natural DIY sugar wax for smooth, glowing skin.

Sugaring, or sugar waxing, involves applying warm, melted sugar onto your skin and quickly pulling it off, taking unwanted hair with it. Unlike hot wax, which uses actual wax, sugaring is seen as a simpler and safer alternative to try at home. The only thing is, your hair needs to be at least a quarter-inch long for it to work. But letting it grow that long is usually no big deal with a little patience.

You can use sugar wax safely on most areas, like your legs, arms, underarms, face, and bikini line. Just avoid using it on damaged skin, just like with any hair removal method.

If you’re considering hair removal, sugaring can be a fantastic option. It’s more beginner-friendly compared to hot waxing with actual wax. Plus, it lasts longer than shaving—up to six weeks!—and is less likely to irritate your skin. Once you get the hang of it, it’s quick and leaves your skin silky smooth for weeks.

Sugaring also acts as an exfoliant by getting rid of dead skin cells, so you’re left with smoother, more radiant skin. Unlike waxing, which strips hair against the natural growth direction, sugaring goes with the grain. This can minimize pain, irritation, and the chances of ingrown hairs and breakage. Over time, you might notice your hair growing back finer and thinner.

While sugar waxing is great, it’s not for everyone, and there are a few things to watch out for. Make sure the sugar isn’t too hot before applying it to avoid painful burns. People with certain skin conditions like eczema or those taking certain medications should avoid sugaring. Some drugs, particularly certain antibiotics, can make skin thinner and more susceptible to tearing. If you’re unsure, do a patch test or consult your doctor.

Not keen on making it or short on time? You can buy organic sugar wax that includes skin-loving ingredients like chamomile, lemon, and tea tree essential oil.

To get started, either buy or make your sugar wax (refer to the recipe below). Preparing the skin area you want to wax is crucial as it helps prevent irritation and ensures effective hair removal. Ensure the skin is completely clean and dry. If dead skin cells and debris are present, the sugar will stick to them rather than pulling out the hair. Consider dry brushing or exfoliating a day in advance to clear the way. Exfoliating right before sugaring might irritate the skin.

Once your skin is clean, apply a thin layer of non-GMO cornstarch or arrowroot powder and brush off the excess. This step helps eliminate any remaining moisture or oil.

Here’s a quick recap:
Sugar wax is water-soluble, making it easier to clean up compared to other methods. Just rinse with warm water afterward, and you’re good to go.

While doing my legs, I just sat with my leg propped up on the bathtub, though you could easily do it in your bedroom or anywhere you feel comfortable. It’s not messy and doesn’t require being in the shower.
