Lately, it seems like many of my friends are expecting, and for once, I’m not pregnant too. I’ve been enjoying going to baby showers and finding the perfect gifts for them. Since it’s been a while since I’ve shopped for baby items—considering we always passed down items with each child—I was surprised to discover that many popular baby gifts are plastic or contain harmful ingredients.
I felt it was time to curate a list of top natural baby gifts. I’m sharing some of the choices I picked for my friends, and would consider for us if we have another baby. For those who like to get crafty, I’ve included links to tutorials for making some of these, but knowing that new moms are often pressed for time, I also found the best pre-made versions available.
Check out my natural homemade baby recipes too. You can never have too many diapers and baby wipes with a newborn. Depending on personal preferences or those of your expecting friends, there are different options available. I used cloth diapers and made my own wipes in the past, but many moms prefer not to use cloth. Even as a cloth diapering parent, I found it challenging to manage while traveling, especially since my husband isn’t a fan when I’m away and he’s on duty. Keeping a small supply of natural diapers and wipes came in handy, especially during frequent summer trips. If someone prefers cloth diapers exclusively, knowing their preferred brand can help you contribute to their collection.
One thing I overlooked with my first child was basic baby care supplies like combs and brushes. While they aren’t thrilling gifts, they are essential. I also didn’t initially think about bottles and sippy cups since I mostly breastfed. However, having bottles for pumped milk can be convenient for those rare moments when a mom needs a break.
Sippy cups become really useful when babies start solids. Unfortunately, many bottles and sippy cups are made of plastic that might leach harmful substances like BPA. It’s better to opt for safer materials like glass or metal. Although not common for baby showers, most baby plates and utensils are plastic and brightly colored. While glass isn’t ideal due to breakage risks, I found it useful to switch to non-plastic options like stainless steel plates and cups for our kids, along with bamboo utensils for travel.
My first was a fall baby, so I didn’t initially consider summer gear, but that changed when our daughters arrived in late spring and summer. While we generally avoid sunscreen, we use natural alternatives when extended sun exposure is unavoidable. Making our own is an option, but there are good natural pre-made sunscreens too.
For a friend, I put together a summer-themed baby basket with beach toys, which can also be great for sandbox or dirt play. Transitioning from winter to summer babies made me realize my blankets were too warm. Muslin blankets are perfect for summer—they work as nursing covers and are ideal for swaddling in warm weather. One pack has lasted through several babies.
I loved using the Ergo Baby Carrier with the newborn insert. After researching a lot, I invested in the Ergo wrap for my third child and wished I’d done so sooner. It replaced the need for a bouncer or stroller, supporting baby’s hips properly to help avoid hip issues.
If you’re the one expecting (congrats!) and want natural gifts for older siblings, I have some favorite natural toys for kids to share. What were your must-have baby items? Did I miss any? Let me know!
