If you’ve ever tried activated charcoal, it was probably in capsule form. These capsules help relieve an upset stomach by flushing out toxins and preventing constipation. Since I’ve made homemade gummies for vitamins and sleep, I thought, why not use activated charcoal in gummies? Activated charcoal is my go-to remedy for when my kids have an upset stomach. The challenge, however, is getting kids who can’t swallow capsules to take it. By making activated charcoal gummies, kids can take their medicine without even realizing it.
These gummies are easy to make, requiring only three ingredients and about 10 minutes of work. Besides the detoxifying charcoal, we use gut-friendly gelatin to make the gummies gel and apple juice for flavor. You can swap out apple juice for any other fruit juice, like orange or pear, if you prefer.
To make them, start by mixing unsweetened apple juice and gelatin powder in a large skillet. Let the gelatin soak in the juice for a few minutes. Then, heat the mixture over medium-high, whisking until the gelatin dissolves. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the activated charcoal powder until fully dissolved with no lumps.
Pour the mixture into a silicone mold using a teaspoon or dropper. Freeze for at least 30 minutes, or until firm. If your mold is small, you may need to freeze in batches. Once firm, pop the gummies out of the mold. Enjoy them right away or store them in an airtight container in the fridge for future use when an upset stomach hits.
