DIY Shaving Solutions for Men

DIY Shaving Solutions for Men

Most of my posts usually focus on women’s topics, but lately, I’ve noticed some requests on Facebook asking for natural skincare and shaving tips for men. Shaving is a major part of many men’s skincare routines.

Although I haven’t personally experienced this, I chatted with my husband and checked out The Art of Manliness for the best shaving advice for guys.

I’ve been making my husband’s shaving soap, aftershave, and facial rinse for a while now. He has really thick hair, and typical products just weren’t cutting it—they only ended up irritating his skin. A few years ago, he switched to using a traditional razor along with a brush shaving set, and he absolutely loves it.

Ladies, if you’re on the hunt for a thoughtful and practical gift for your husband, boyfriend, or dad, a genuine shaving kit with some homemade products is an excellent choice!

Both my husband and the general feedback on The Art of Manliness forums suggest that for a truly proper shave (if you decide to shave, which is quite a hot topic over there), a man should use either a classic safety razor or a straight razor, ideally paired with a brush and mug soap instead of regular shaving cream.

There are even brush and mug sets available, including some with stainless steel handles and safety razors. Interestingly, these “old-school” shaving methods are actually more cost-effective in the long run (no need to buy disposable or pricey razor heads) and are much better for the skin, especially when coupled with natural shaving cream.

For men willing to try natural shaving, there are plenty of great recipes to make homemade shaving soap that’s entirely natural and organic. Not really into making your own shave soap? Don’t worry! There are decent store-bought options available, like the shaving soap from Badger.

It’s best to avoid alcohol-based aftershaves for the same reason you shouldn’t use rubbing alcohol on new piercings—it hinders the healing process. Instead, try an alcohol-free, nourishing alternative like my homemade herbal aftershave for men. And you can finish off with a homemade lotion bar packed with nourishing ingredients.

What do you (or the men in your life) use for shaving? Do you prefer new razors or old-fashioned ones? Shaving cream or soap? Aftershave or no aftershave? Feel free to share your thoughts below!
