I’ve been spending a lot of time outside with my kids lately and, honestly, this summer feels hotter than usual. It’s not just the heat; the humidity and heat index seem to be trying to outdo each other in breaking records. Even though there are days I’d prefer to stay indoors (maybe take an ice bath), summer is perfect for enjoying activities like backyard fun, running through sprinklers, slip-and-slides, hiking, and ziplines. So, we’re outside despite the heat!
I’ve discovered a DIY cooling spray that’s an absolute lifesaver on blazing hot days, and it’s super easy to make with just three ingredients I usually have at home. The idea for this spray came to me during a break from outdoor work. I was reapplying homemade bug spray and downing a lot of water when I realized the bug spray left a surprisingly cooling sensation on my skin. This was thanks to the natural ingredients like witch hazel and peppermint essential oil.
I decided to create a spray specifically for cooling off without smelling like a bug repellent. The result is a cooling spray I now use regularly during yard work, beach trips, and backyard BBQs. It even helps soothe itchy bug bites and sunburns.
Despite occasionally grumbling about the heat, especially when it gets really humid, I really do love this time of year. Being outdoors has so many health benefits, and I never regret spending time outside checking off more summer bucket list activities.
