7 Homemade Makeup Remover Recipes for Healthier Skin

If you’re making the effort to apply natural DIY makeup, it’s logical to use a natural method to remove it too. Having struggled with acne when I was younger, I now prioritize skin care. Over the years, I’ve experimented with different natural solutions for healthy, glowing skin, and I’m excited to share some of my top DIY makeup remover tips with you.

Let’s be real; wanting to feel pretty doesn’t take away from being a “Wellness Mom.” I’ve learned the value of self-care through simple, natural, and affordable means, like taking a calming lavender bath, using homemade whipped body butter, and applying makeup. These small actions make a big difference, especially when juggling six kids. While I’m completely okay with not wearing makeup (which happens often), having a few beauty tricks up my sleeve is nice, especially when it allows me to avoid the harsh chemicals found in regular products.

There are several fantastic options for naturally removing makeup, which also serve as excellent skincare solutions even when you’re not wearing any makeup. One of the simplest methods is oil cleansing, which literally means cleaning your face with oil. While it may sound odd, oil cleansing can actually dissolve the excess oil in your pores. The right oils can balance your skin, whether it’s too dry or too oily, and this method works for all skin types!

Some popular oils for this technique include castor and olive oil, but experimenting might lead you to discover others that suit your skin better, like sunflower, safflower, avocado, or coconut oils. For me, a mix of 3/4 olive oil to 1/4 castor or hazelnut oil is ideal. You might experience an adjustment period of around 3-4 weeks during which breakouts can increase, but once your skin settles, it will likely clear up and look great.

If you want to take oil cleansing to the next level, consider adding witch hazel. Derived from the witch hazel shrub, this herbal extract has a rich history in skincare. I love it because it serves multiple purposes, from treating acne and soothing dry skin to removing makeup.

Another DIY option is combining aloe vera gel with a couple of skin-friendly ingredients to remove makeup and impurities efficiently. Also, conventional makeup wipes often contain chemical preservatives and other unnatural ingredients, so making your own wipes is simple and more skin-friendly.

Honey, with its natural antibacterial properties, helps fight acne and removes dead skin cells. For an exfoliating scrub that gives you clear skin, consider using ground walnut shell, which is also available in some natural products. However, making your own DIY makeup remover scrub can be a cost-effective alternative. Do remember to avoid the eyes and choose a different recipe for removing eye makeup.

Rose water is another favorite of mine. Its pleasant and feminine scent makes it perfect for various uses, including in my beauty routine. To make a DIY makeup remover with rose water, mix the ingredients in a pump bottle.

Trying out a DIY skincare routine isn’t as daunting as it seems. With all these options, you’re bound to find what’s perfect for your skin type. Which DIY makeup remover will you try first?
