Simple Homemade Face Wipes

Simple Homemade Face Wipes

Sometimes, I like to make my own disinfecting reusable wipes for cleaning, so I thought I’d try something similar for my facial routine. These DIY face wipes could easily become a favorite part of your skincare routine, whether for removing makeup or just refreshing your face!

Did you know that disposable makeup remover wipes and cleansing wipes can take around 100 years to decompose? That’s mainly because over 90% of them are made from plastic, which isn’t great for our environment. Plus, there’s the issue of harmful chemicals and preservatives in many beauty products.

The market for disposable wipes is expected to hit over $8 billion in sales by 2027. Yup, billions! Many people love the convenience of makeup remover pads and wipes. But here’s some good news: you can easily make your own DIY makeup remover wipes at home!

There are several ways to create your DIY face wipes. Some tutorials suggest using paper towels, cotton pads, or baby washcloths. Paper towels aren’t the most sustainable option, mainly because of the chemicals used in producing them. Although it’s easier now to find unbleached, healthier options, they might be costly.

Cotton pads are another choice but go for organic ones. Many cotton farmers use a lot of undisclosed chemicals, so it’s safer with organic. Even though disposable cotton rounds are for single use, they won’t sit in a landfill for over 100 years. Here are a few organic cotton rounds if you’re sticking with disposables.

Baby washcloths are also recommended for DIY wipes. While they’re soft and compact, they’re often made from synthetic fabrics, essentially plastic, which can pollute water supplies. So I wouldn’t suggest them.

What do I use for homemade makeup remover wipes? There are still many awesome options like flannel, cotton terrycloth, and organic cotton. You can recycle old receiving blankets, cotton T-shirts, or even buy new reusable baby wipes.

If you’re not into sewing, try pre-made organic reusable cotton wipes, or you can simply cut up some old flannel and T-shirts you have on hand.

These wipes are similar to my baby wipes recipe, which I’ve used on my face too! This version includes extra ingredients for moisturizing and cleansing various skin types. Whether your skin is sensitive, dry, or break-out prone, these are customizable.

They start with natural ingredients like distilled water, witch hazel, aloe vera, and essential oils. Castile soap makes them a great substitute for face wash. To add some smoothness and moisture, use a liquid oil like olive oil, avocado oil, or fractionated coconut oil.

Witch hazel acts as a toner ideal for oily skin, but if your skin is really dry, you might want to reduce or skip it. Aloe vera is soothing and moisturizing, making it a favorite in skincare recipes.

Essential oils are optional, offering a pleasant scent and added skin benefits. Plus, inhaling them provides mental and emotional health perks. Just make sure to choose skin-friendly oils! Essential oils like lemon, lime, and bergamot can cause burns if applied before sun exposure, so it’s best to avoid those.

If you plan on using these for eye makeup removal, skip the essential oils.
