I’ve talked before about how I use soap nuts for laundry, and since then, I’ve received several questions about using them as shampoo, too. Finding a natural shampoo that suits your hair type can be a real challenge. Some people have success with coconut milk-based shampoos, while others like the no-poo method, but that one isn’t for me. If neither of those has worked for you, here’s another option you might want to try.
Soap nuts, originating from India and Nepal but found in both hemispheres, have gained popularity as an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical detergents. They’re a gentle choice for people allergic to chemicals in regular detergents. Traditionally, they’ve been used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat eczema and psoriasis because they contain saponin, a natural detergent. When the soap nut shell absorbs water, it releases saponins, which act as a natural surfactant in the wash water, helping to remove dirt, grime, and oils.
You can easily make a natural shampoo or body wash from soap nuts, which is soothing for eczema or psoriasis. It’s also very cheap to make and completely natural. Here’s a tip: if you make a full batch, you can store it in ice cube trays and freeze it in individual portions. Alternatively, keep it in a peri bottle in the fridge and use it whenever you shower.
If you’re not interested in making it yourself and prefer a more convenient option, you can always purchase pre-made Soap Nuts Shampoo.
