Crafting Your Own Luxurious Lotion at Home

Crafting Your Own Luxurious Lotion at Home

If you’re still relying on store-bought lotion, there are super simple natural alternatives that are fun to make on your own! This DIY lotion recipe involves just three main ingredients and takes only about ten minutes to put together.

This basic recipe isn’t like traditional lotions that mix water and oils; instead, it’s a water-free, ultra-moisturizing version that can last for years without needing preservatives. It’s more like a body butter, making it perfect for dry skin.

A few years back, I realized I could create my own skincare products with natural ingredients, and I haven’t stopped since! I enjoy making a variety of products, from homemade lip balm to whipped body butter. Lotion bars were my starting point, and I’ve experimented with different types of lotions since then. For this version, I use unrefined coconut oil, almond oil, and shea butter to deeply nourish the skin.

Most lotions combine distilled water and carrier oils using emulsifying wax, which can be a bit tricky to do at home and often requires preservatives to prevent spoilage. This DIY lotion avoids these issues by leaving out the water. Including vitamin E can further extend its shelf life, as it helps prevent oils from going rancid quickly.

I prefer using sweet almond oil as the carrier oil because it’s moderately light—not as heavy as coconut oil, yet more moisturizing than grapeseed oil. However, you can swap it out for any liquid carrier oil you like, such as jojoba, olive, or avocado oil.

This lotion is incredibly moisturizing and oilier compared to water-based lotions, so you won’t need much. Its shelf life outlasts many homemade lotion recipes since all the ingredients are already stable and there’s no added water.

Once you’ve mastered the basic recipe, have fun personalizing your lotion to suit your skin type, specific skin needs, and preferred scent! There are countless variations, but here are a few of my favorites:

When it comes to adding essential oils to your DIY lotion, the amount depends on the oil and your personal preference. If you’re adding optional shea butter, then using 45 drops of essential oil results in a 1% dilution, which is generally safe for lotion. For a stronger scent, you might increase it to a 2% dilution, or reduce it if you prefer a lighter scent or have sensitive skin. I avoid using essential oils on younger children, especially babies.

Some oils like wintergreen, cinnamon, and lemongrass are stronger and should be used sparingly. Others, like grapefruit and lime, are phototoxic. Some of my favorite skin-friendly essential oils include:

If you want a healthy lotion but don’t feel like making it yourself or lack the ingredients, there are some great store-bought options out there with clean ingredients that keep your skin hydrated.
