I typically use my homemade all-purpose cleaner for most things around the house, but it doesn’t work for every surface. Our kitchen countertops are granite, and since it’s a bit tricky to clean without damaging, I tried out a homemade granite cleaner.
After some trial and error, I found the perfect recipe. This natural granite cleaner leaves my countertops spotless and shiny without causing harm, and it’s easy to make! Simplicity is essential in homemade cleaning products, and this one fits the bill.
There are many natural cleaners you can make at home, but granite is particular when it comes to cleaning. Acidic ingredients like vinegar or lemon juice can cause etching, and baking soda may scratch the surface. Some store-bought cleaners can strip the protective sealant off the granite.
Even soap and water aren’t ideal. Too much dish soap can leave a film, and plain water doesn’t disinfect well and often leaves streaks. So, what’s the trick to clean granite counters?
It’s simpler than you think! While many usual natural ingredients are off the table, one key component—plus water—cleans granite perfectly.
All you need is a bit of alcohol mixed with water. Alcohol is a disinfectant and evaporates quickly, preventing streaks. I usually use vodka, but rubbing alcohol works fine too.
Store-bought granite cleaners are pricier and contain a similar formula to mine. They typically include water, alcohol, surfactants like soap, preservatives, and various fragrances. My homemade version does the job just as well but avoids unnecessary additives and saves you money!
This cleaner is easy to make and effective. You need alcohol (vodka or rubbing alcohol), castile soap, water, and essential oils. That’s it! Although you mainly need alcohol and water, I prefer adding a tiny amount of castile soap to tackle grease. A few drops of essential oils for scent complete the mixture. I store it in a glass spray bottle, especially when using citrus oils.
I’m delighted when my kitchen is not just clean, but smells fresh too. In a busy natural kitchen, with lots of cooking and food prep, a little extra cleaning power is useful.
Thankfully, two oils are particularly great for cleaning in the kitchen and are safe for granite.
Basil, popular in the kitchen, is antibacterial and antiviral. Studies show it inhibits E-coli and different bacteria and fungi strains. Its essential oil has an uplifting and energizing scent.
Citrus oils are loved in cleaners for their refreshing aroma. Grapefruit essential oil combines well with basil and provides antimicrobial benefits.
One study even showed grapefruit’s effectiveness against antibiotic-resistant strains, including MRSA.
You’ve got to be careful with vinegar and lemon juice as they’re too acidic for granite. But citrus essential oils, diluted correctly, are safe. In this cleaner, grapefruit oil is about 0.25% diluted. Unlike citrus juices, these oils don’t have an acidic pH, so they’re safe for granite when diluted.
I love experimenting with different oils in homemade cleaners. When you’re ready for a change, try other oils. Lavender and lemon are both cleansing and smell great together. A “thieves” blend of cinnamon, clove, and orange offers strong antimicrobial power. Tea tree oil is another favorite since it’s naturally antibacterial and works as a disinfectant.
There are many oils and combinations perfect for cleaning; it all boils down to your preference.
Using a granite-safe cleaner is the first step toward keeping your granite looking new. Here are some other tips for care:
