Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) are a hot topic because technology is constantly evolving, and we don’t completely understand how these fields impact us. Avoiding EMFs entirely is nearly impossible in our tech-driven world, but there are easy ways to cut down on WiFi and EMF exposure. In fact, there’s a simple tip that can cut exposure by half!
The short answer to why we’re concerned is that we don’t yet know everything. The research is mixed, so we’re uncertain about how different EMFs might affect our bodies.
EMFs, or Electromagnetic Fields, are all around us, from cell phone signals to WiFi and radio frequencies. Some experts think certain types of EMFs could be harmful, but more research is needed since this technology is relatively new.
What we do know is that our bodies also have electric and magnetic fields. Medical devices like EKGs measure the heart’s electrical activity. Our nervous system and even single cells are equipped to conduct electricity. At a fundamental level, we’re made up of atoms with protons, neutrons, and electrons. A change in these charges allows electrons to flow, creating electricity. With all these atoms, our bodies generate electricity.
It’s logical that since our bodies are electrical, exposure to electrical fields could affect us somehow. While we’re still figuring out to what extent, it’s worth being aware of.
We’re currently exposed to millions of times more EMFs than past generations, a significant increase over a short period. I think it’s wise to be cautious and stay informed as new research comes out. Small changes can lower exposure at no cost with no drawbacks.
Experts have mentioned that sleep is the most vulnerable time for EMF exposure since the body repairs itself then, making cells more sensitive. Plus, you’re not using the internet while asleep. Turning off WiFi at night can halve exposure with no downside.
The best part? With a $15 device and five minutes to set it up, you can automate this process. You won’t need to remember to turn your router on or off nightly!
How does it work? If you’ve used a timer for Christmas lights or when you’re away, you can apply that idea here to reduce night-time WiFi exposure. You’ll need a couple of things. At our place, everything internet-related goes through this setup, like routers and a printer. We connect these to a surge protector, plug that into a timer, and then into the wall.
Set the timer to turn off during hours you don’t need WiFi, like when you’re asleep. We cut WiFi at 10 PM and restart it at 8 AM, reducing 10 hours of exposure nightly. If we need late-night internet for a project or movie, we manually override it and return to the timer afterwards.
This setup means our kids miss strong WiFi signals for two-thirds of their day while spending time outdoors or away. For under $15, it’s an effortless way to reduce exposure.
While more research is needed on EMFs’ effects, these straightforward steps can lessen exposure. If you’re keen to learn more, there are many resources available, including podcasts, articles, and books.
What are your thoughts on EMFs, and how do you minimize WiFi and EMF exposure in your life?
