Creative Ways to Craft and Utilize Dried Flowers for Decor, Tinctures, and Beyond

Around here, we use flowers for more than just decoration. From calendula for skincare to dandelions for iced lime tea, they’re incredibly versatile. While I appreciate a beautiful bouquet, I always think about how to make that beauty last longer.

After doing some research, I’ve found five natural ways to preserve flowers so they can brighten up our lives for weeks, or even months. Flowers aren’t just visually appealing; they also make us feel good. Studies show that flowers boost our mood and improve our interactions with others. In one study from 2005, people who received flowers felt happier and even had better memories.

Sure, fresh flowers can be pricey (that’s why I enjoy getting potted plants as gifts), but drying them is another way to keep their beauty and emotional benefits lasting longer. Dried flowers are a simple and timeless method to keep enjoying them, but some flowers, like sunflowers and daisies, don’t dry well because they tend to lose their petals. It’s best to choose sturdy flowers and collect them when they’re vibrant but not fully open.

There are three simple methods to dry flowers: hanging, pressing, or using wax:

Hanging Method:

– Pros: It’s easy and requires minimal prep time. Great for flowers and herbs you might want to use in tinctures.
– Cons: Colors can fade, and dried flowers can crumble if handled roughly.

To get the best results, keep dried flowers away from sunlight and wind. Properly stored, they can last for years.

Pressing Method:

– Pros: Easy with low prep. Perfect for framing but loses the three-dimensional look, suitable only for some flowers.

Pressing flowers is great for flat blooms. You can use a flower press or good old books. Properly stored, pressed flowers last indefinitely. They can be framed or laminated for bookmarks.

Waxing Method:

– Pros: Preserves color well and can last indefinitely.
– Cons: Requires more time and cleanup.

Beeswax is my go-to for preserving flowers because it’s natural and eco-friendly. While this method can be fiddly, the results are worth it. Waxed flowers can last from 1-4 weeks, sometimes even years if kept out of direct sunlight.

Using dried flowers opens up a world of possibilities. Whether you’re new to drying flowers or an old hand at it, it’s a fantastic way to keep their beauty and joy in our lives. How do you like to use your dried flowers?
