A few years back, I stumbled upon a fire cider recipe. Initially, it didn’t sound like something I was eager to try, but after reading about its immune-boosting perks, I mustered the courage to give it a shot. Now, it’s a go-to remedy in our home during cold and flu season.
Fire cider is a traditional concoction featuring garlic, onion, ginger, cayenne, vinegar, and raw honey. Although the original recipe includes horseradish, I usually swap it out for echinacea root to make it more palatable for the kids.
This cider combines the health benefits of onion, garlic, ginger, herbs, vinegar, and raw honey into a nourishing drink with a bit of a zing. At first glance, the ingredient list might not seem appetizing, and I felt the same way until I was pleasantly surprised by its flavor. It even works well as a salad dressing with its mild, peppery, and slightly sweet vinaigrette taste.
During the winter months, I sometimes take a teaspoon each day or use it as a salad dressing. If I feel under the weather, I increase the dose to every few hours or add a tablespoon to hot water or herbal tea a few times a day until I recover.
For the kids, I reduce or omit the cayenne. They seem to handle the taste fairly well, thanks to the honey balancing out the vinegar.
If you find that you enjoy fire cider, I highly recommend checking out Rosemary Gladstar’s Medicinal Herbs book, which introduced me to this remedy. Additionally, my “Wellness Mama 5-Step Lifestyle Detox” book offers more natural remedy and beauty recipes.
