Want to get your skin feeling smooth and refreshed? Try making this easy Himalayan salt scrub at home. It’s a simple way to exfoliate and get rid of dead skin cells. I always keep homemade beauty products like this one around the house!
Exfoliating with a scrub like this can help increase blood flow, reduce the appearance of cellulite, and improve your skin’s tone and health. Dry brushing is a great technique, but a Himalayan salt scrub offers even more benefits. The addition of essential oils also brings in some mood-lifting aromatherapy.
This scrub is ideal for your body, but keep in mind that salt might be too rough for sensitive facial skin. For a face scrub, you might want to try a gentler option like the anti-inflammatory cumin sugar scrub.
Salt works similarly to sugar in exfoliating the skin and boosting circulation, but it also contains beneficial minerals. Unlike regular table salt, which loses its nutrients through processing, different types of healthy salts can be used in scrubs. For this recipe, I chose Himalayan salt for its rich mineral content. If you prefer, you can use other types of healthy salt, just ensure it is finely ground.
Himalayan salt is packed with minerals and trace elements like calcium, magnesium, and iron. It can help balance electrolyte and pH levels, strengthen bones, and support circulation, among other benefits. This salt scrub brings all these nutrients right to your skin.
Most scrubs need a carrier oil to help the mixture glide over your skin. In this one, I use coconut oil for its excellent skin benefits, along with lighter sweet almond oil for added moisture. I also include a bit of castile soap to cleanse while you exfoliate for a comprehensive approach.
If you don’t have almond oil, you can substitute it with other oils such as olive, jojoba, grapeseed, or fractionated coconut oil—just make sure it’s liquid at room temperature.
Grapefruit essential oil is a great addition because it helps stimulate the lymphatic system and can reduce water retention while improving circulation and minimizing cellulite. Interestingly, just smelling grapefruit was shown in a 2005 study to help boost metabolism and assist with weight loss. It’s also rich in limonene, which protects against free radical damage. Plus, it smells fantastic.
Some experts warn that grapefruit oil can increase sun sensitivity if it’s above 4% concentration, but since it’s washed off in this scrub and is only at 0.5%, there’s no need to worry.
Peppermint oil gives the scrub an invigorating touch with its menthol content. It can wake you up, boost energy, and help balance skin oil levels. It can even aid in soothing headaches. Be cautious with peppermint oil though, as it’s strong and should be well-diluted and not used on very young children. In this scrub, the amount is minimal, just enough for the scent.
